The temples of South India have long been respected by all architecture experts around the world, and revered by the devotees equally. They represent the most flourishing period of Hindu dynasties as well as Teh religion. Most of the temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva or Vishnu, often with intricately carved corridors, mysterious inner sanctums, and idols often fashioned out of gold or silver. The darshan – the moment of seeing the holy person or deity – is considered a sacred moment for many temple visitors.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Chennai

Upon arrival at Chennai International Airport, you will be picked up from the airport and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day can be spend at leisure.

Day 2Chennai - Tirupati - Chennai

After an early breakfast today, we will go for a full day tour of Tirupati.

Tirupati is located in Andhra Pradesh. When we reach Tirupati, we will proceed for Tirupati Temple Darshan. We will visit the temple of Lord Venkateswara, which is located on the Tirumala hill and Tirupati is at the footsteps of the Tirumala hills. Other temples that we will be visiting in and around Tirupati are – Sri Padmavathi Devi temple at Tiruchanoor, Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Srinivasa Mangapuram, Govindaraja Swamy Temple, Kapila Theertham in Tirupati town at the base of Tirumala Hills dedicated to Lord Siva, Sri Kodandaramaswami Temple, Tirupati built by Chola kings during the tenth century AD and Sri Kalahasteeswara Temple at Srikalahasti.

In the late afternoon return to Chennai.

Day 3Chennai - Kanchipuram - Mamallapuram

Today after breakfast we will leave for Mamallapuram, earlier known as Mahabalipuram. On our way to Mamallapuram, we will visit Kanchipuram , which is also known as the city of thousand temples. Kanchipuram was the capital of the early Cholas as far back as the 2nd century BC. The place is also famous for its silk weavers, who had settled here 400 years ago.

After spending some time here at the sacred city, we will drive to Mamallapuram. When we reach Mallapuram, we will check into our hotel. We will keep our luggage in our hotel and then get going for sightseeing. We will visit the Krishna Mandapam, which has a big bas relief.The world’s largest bas relief measuring 27m x 9m, whale back shaped rock contains figures of gods, demi-gods, men beasts, birds and representation of the entire creation. Then we will visit the Shore Temple, which is one of the oldest in south dating back to 8th century AD. Next we will visit the Five Rathas, which are a group of five monolithic temples.

Return back to your accommodation for the night.

Day 4Mamallapuram - Tiruvannamalai - Pondicherry

After breakfast we will start on our journey to Tiruvannamalai. The name, meaning the “red mountain” derives from the spectacular extinct volcano behind it. The temple town of Tiruvannamalai is one of the most ancient heritage sites of India and is a centre of the Saiva religion. We will visit the Arunachala Temple in Tiruvannamalai. The temple is grand in conception and architecture and is rich in tradition, history and festivals.

After having lunch we will leave for Pondicherry. When we reach Pondicherry we will check into our hotel.

Day 5Pondicherry Sightseeing

After breakfast today, we are going to embark on a full day tour of Pondicherry. We will start our excursion by visiting the Aurobindo Ashram, which is the most well known ashram in India. Next we will visit the Pondicherry Museum, which has a collection of rare bronzes and stone sculptures from the Pallava and Chola dynasties. From here we will move on to the Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was built by French Missionaries in the 1700’s. And lastly we will visit the Manakula Vinayagar Koil Temple, which is more than 300 years old.

Day 6Pondicherry - Chidambaram - Thanjavur

After breakfast we will leave for Thanjavur, earlier known as Tanjore. On our way we will stop at Chidambaram, a place which is dedicated to Lord Nataraja. Spread over an area of 40 acres with a gopuram on each side, the temple is distinguished by five sabhas or courts. Apart from this, the sacred land of Chidambaram, has many exquisite temples and attractions.

After lunch we will continue to drive to Thanjavur, Upon reaching Thanjavur, we will check into our hotel.

Day 7 Thanjavur - Tiruchirappalli

After breakfast we will go for Thanjavur temple tour. We will visit the Brihadeeswara Temple, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanjavur is an important center of South Indian art and architecture. Most of the Great Living Chola Temples which are UNESCO World heritage monuments are located in and around Thanjavur.

In the afternoon, after lunch, we will leave for Tiruchirappalli. When we reach Tiruchirappalli, we will check into our hotel.

Day 8 Tiruchirappalli - Madurai

After breakfast we will go for the sightseeing of the temples at Tiruchirappalli. We will start by visiting the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple which is located on Srirangam island. After spending some time mesmerizing at the gigantic temple, we will shift to the Rock Fort. This is Tiruchirappalli’s most famous landmark. The rock is one of the oldest in the world. However the centre of attraction is the temple at the summit.

In the late afternoon, we will drive down to Madurai. We will check into our hotel in Madurai once we reach.

Day 9Madurai Sightseeing

After breakfast we will go on to explore Madurai. It is situated on the bank of river Vaigai and has been the kingdom of Pandya kings in the past century. The city is constructed in the form of a lotus and is known as lotus city too. There is a beautiful temple constructed by the Pandyan kings and Lord Shiva is worshiped here. It was believed that divine nectar was showered at that place and due to it the Jasmine flowers bloom in the place all around. We will visit the Meenakshi Temple and in the evening will witness the Prayer Ceremony at the temple.

Day 10Madurai - Kanyakumari

Today after breakfast we will leave for Kanyakumari. Upon reaching Kanyakumari, we will keep our luggage in our hotel and then go on to explore the place. We will first visit the Swami Vivekananda’s Memorial. Next we will go to see the Kumari Amman Temple. The idol of the goddess in this temple has a nose ring studded with diamond which is visible even from the sea. We will further go to see the Thiruvalluvar statue..

Day 11Kanyakumari - Trivandrum

After breakfast we will leave for Trivandrum. When we reach Trivandrum, we will keep our luggage in the hotel and go on to exploring the place. We will visit the Padmanabha Swamy Temple, and also visit the Napier Museum, which is a 19th century monument.

Day 12Departure

Today after breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport from where you will take your flight back home.
