India is fairly a safe country to travel in however like any other place you should take basic precautions. If you are hard pressed for time, then min 7-8 days would be required for your first time visit. However if you really wish to spend some good amount of time in India and go deeper, please spend min 20-25 days. For more details read here

If you have less time preferred mode of transport should be flights as far as possible. Train travel has its own advantage if you wish to travel the length and breadth of India and dive deep into its cultural roots. Within the cities and for hill stations booking a cab/taxi makes sense.

To enter India you need a valid passport and an onward/return ticket, and a visa. Note that your passport needs to be valid for at least 180 days after your entry into India, and should have at least two blank pages.
