Experience the expansive Ajanta and Ellora caves.Exemplary examples of Indian rock cut architecture and designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the complexes of Ajantha and Ellora consist of ancient Buddhist, Jain and Hindu monastries, temples and prayer halls.

Located in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, the caves are located at a distance of 100 kilometre from eachother, and while the 34 caves at Ellora are dated to be from between the 6th and 11th centuries AD, the 29 caves at Ajanta date back to between the 2nd century BC and 6th century AD. World reknown for its intricate  ornamentation in the form of paintings, murals and sculptures, even today one of the most incomprehensible facts about the caves is that they were crafted by hand, with only a hammer and a chisel.

On this journey, step back in time as you explore some of the most celebrated examples of Indian heritage. Across four days discover, the sheer magnificance and richness of the imposing caves, giving you a glimpse of the grandeur of ancient India.

What to Expect

Over a course of four days experience the glory of the Ajanta and Ellora caves first hand. Slowly explore Buddhist, Hindu and Jain culture, brought to life by intricate sculptures, murals and paintings.  Explore the megalithic Kailash Temple, immerse in art that narrates tales that speak of the ancient, and explore temples and prayer halls dedicated to Buddha, Shiva and Vishnu.

Itinerary

Day 1Aurangabad (Arrival)

Arrive at Chilkalthana Airport, Aurangabad. A representative from our end will pick you up to drop you to your accommodation.

Check in and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2A tour of the stunning Ajanta caves

Start the day with a delicious breakfast.

After which we will set out to tour the caves of Ajanta.

Spend the day exploring rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE. Home to the finest surviving examples of Ancient Indian art, the Ajantha cave complex is made up of monasteries and worship-halls of Buddhist tradition and is adorned by sculptures, painting and murals which narrate tales of the past lives and rebirths of Buddha.

Head back to your accommodation for the night.

Day 3A tour of the jem that is Ellora.

After a delightful breakfast, set out to tour the caves at Ellora.

One of the largest rock-cut complexes in the world, the caves at Ellora feature Buddhist, Jain and Hindu monuments, dating to the 600-1000 CE period. Telling tales of mythology, the walls of these caves boast of some of the most famous masterpieces of ancient Indian art.

Celebrated as India’s largest rock-cut Hindu Temple, the Kailash temple, a megalith among the Ellora Caves, known for its remarkable size and sculptural treatment, complete with life-size sculptures of elephants, is undoubtedly one of today’s highlights.

Head back to your accommodation for the night.

Day 4Devgiri fort sightseeing/ Departure

Today you will visit the Devgiri Fort, before heading to the airport for the flight back home.

Post breakfast set out to the fascinating fort city of Devgiri. Once the capital of the Tughlaq dynasty, it was renamed Daulatabad.
Fort Devgiri is fascinating, devoid of the usual opulence that usual marks Mughal legacy, built into the rock it is a formidable labyrinth of irregular floors, twists, turns and dark bat infested tunnels.

Culminating a few illuminating days with a tour of this magnificent fort, head to Chilkalthana Airport, Aurangabad for the flight back home.
