Poovar, any day would probably be a better choice to stay than Trivandrum / Kovalam because (1) it has got a fantastic golden sand lagoon beach that Kovalam doesn’t have, and (2) it is so very quieter. The sunset view at this lagoon is just awesome.
Poovar has limited staying options, and CMH makes for a good stay. Though we stayed in a HU (booked late, got no rooms) which was the worst I ever stayed in, the property overall is nice – good normal rooms, nice pool, a quite impressive bar/lounge, very nice entertainment area, a spa, and what a killer of a restaurant – some very awesome dishes and authentic tastes be it any Indian cuisine. The staff as usual CMH (except the swimming pool in charge) best in hospitality.
Go to CMH for the access to Poovar (and makes easier travels to Kanyakumari). The colors of sunset that you will see from even their Jetty point with Jesus as the backdrop is something MasterCard doesn’t buy!
Room Tip: Don’t choose Hotel Units. Look for 1BR suites as they come with their own personal pools.
